About
Folder Password Protector Software is a folder password protector for Windows 10 and 11. It locks a folder where it sits, without renaming or moving it, by adding deny rules to the folder permissions, and it can encrypt the files inside when stronger protection is needed. No kernel driver is installed, the program runs without administrator rights, and your files never leave the computer.
How to use Folder Password Protector Software
1. Start the program and enter your master password. The list of protected folders stays hidden until you do.
2. Drag a folder onto the window.
3. Choose Lock, and turn on hiding if the folder should also vanish from view.
4. For sensitive content choose Encrypt instead, then print or save the recovery key.
5. Read the result check, which confirms that the folder really is locked or encrypted.
6. To open the folder again, unlock it in the program with your password.
Trial note: there is no time limit on the free trial, and every function is included. Unregistered, it protects a limited number of folders and files, and a license lifts the cap. Unlocking and decryption keep working without a license.
What it handles
- Lock: access is denied through folder permissions that survive a restart. The folder keeps its name and place, and locking takes moments whatever its size.
- Hide: optional hidden and system attributes on a locked folder.
- Encrypt: each file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from your password with Argon2id. Big folders take longer.
- Safe interruption: encryption writes to a temporary file and swaps it in, so a crash or power cut does not leave half-written files.
- A recovery key that is not tied to hardware, an email address or a server.
- Password changes without encrypting everything again.
- Automatic relock when you exit the program or after a period of inactivity.
- A volume check that flags FAT32 and exFAT drives.
- A warning during uninstall, plus an emergency utility.
- Progress with a time estimate, and an interface in 20 languages.
Limits
Lock mode does not stop someone who boots the PC from a USB stick, or the folder owner who changes its permissions. Use Encrypt for that case.
Who it is for
People who share one Windows PC with family or coworkers, freelancers who keep client files on a laptop, and admins who want a lock folder Windows tool that needs no driver on the machines they manage. As a folder password protector it behaves the same on a desktop and on a laptop.
Questions
Why can't I password protect a folder in Windows 11?
File Explorer has no setting that asks for a password before a folder opens. A separate tool lets you password protect folder contents, and this one does it through the folder's own permissions.
Can you put a lock on a file folder?
Yes. Lock mode adds deny entries to the folder permissions, so Explorer and other programs refuse to open it until you unlock it with your password.
How do I make my folder private?
Lock it and switch on hiding, so it is both closed and out of sight. If the content is confidential, encrypt it as well and keep the recovery key somewhere safe.
